An Exploratory Study on Peer Rejection Sensitivity among Children: Findings from a Literature Review and Child Interviews
Choi Jung-Won

Lim Jung-Ha
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to propose a conceptual framework for the components of peer rejection sensitivity among children. A review of the previous literature and child interviews were conducted to investigate the components of peer rejection sensitivity among children. Five 5th and 6th grade students in elementary schools in South Korea who had previously received counseling for issues relating to peer relationship problems participated in the interviews. The results of the literature review and child interviews were analyzed and grouped, based on cognitive-affective units. As a result, peer rejection sensitivity was observed to consist of five factors, rejection perception, rejection expectation, rejection anxiety, rejection anger, and rejection depression. Rejection perception is the tendency to perceive and interpret ambiguous cues negatively as intentional rejection and rejection expectation is the tendency to expect rejection in peer interactions. Rejection anxiety is the tendency to feel anxious and worried in anticipation of peer rejection, rejection anger is the tendency to feel angry and irritated, and rejection depression is the tendency to feel sad and depressed. This study will enhance our understanding of peer rejection sensitivity among children. Further implications on child counseling which focused on peer rejection sensitivity were also discussed.
